ECDC’s 17th Annual Conference and Banquet
African Refugees and Immigrants: 60 years,
after the Refugee Convention:
Challenges and Opportunities

May 2-4, 2011
Holiday Inn Ballston
Arlington, VA

In recognition of UNHCR’s planned year-long observance of significant milestones in global refugee protection and assistance efforts, this year’s conference theme is: African Refugees and Immigrants 60 years after the Refugee Convention: Challenges and Opportunities. The historic milestones are the 60th anniversary of United Nation’s Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the 50th anniversary of African independence from colonial rule. Adopted by a special United Nations conference on July 28, 1951, the Refugee Convention defined for the first time the status of refugees and the obligations of signatory nations in providing asylum, assistance and protection. The Convention’s mandate was later expanded to better address the worsening and persistent problem of global displacement. In 1969, member states adopted the then Organization of African Unity’s Refugee Convention to respond to the particular needs of increasing numbers of refugees displaced in the aftermath of decolonization struggles across the continent.
